Pabbar River meandering through the picturesque valley.
Pabbar River meandering through the picturesque valley

Achal at Mountain Club, Bhimtal.Achal's Gab: All of us were itching to test-drive Ajay and Neera’s new BMW 320D on the hills. We had had a quick taste on Saturday night from GK2 to DLF Promenade; which certainly left us pining for more. So during the Good Friday Weekend we went off to Bhimtal. We were booked at Mountain Club which is 3 kms off the main road through a forest jeep track. Though a luxury sedan, the BMW 320D is a mean machine and handling it was a great experience. It is a shame though that the spat between the NHAI and UP State Govt has left many of the flyovers and road work between Ghaziabad and Gajraula half-done.

The lake at Sattal.Mountain Club is a nice, quaint, small property built in cottage style. The service is somewhat laid-back so in a way it sets the flavor of the vacation - that there is no rush in life! Doesn’t an out-of-town vacation relax you and don’t you actually seem to have all the time in the world? I finally got to put body and lens of my new Canon Digital SLR together and Ranjana managed to take her new 8x40 binocs out of the box. (doing things out-of-the-box are not so simple in your work environs!).

We trekked from Bhimtal to Sattal and traced all the seven lakes of Sattal. The next day’s morning hike to “Cliff-Hanger” across Freddy’s Cottage was enjoyable and the lake views from the top were great. We also had a rejuvenating yoga and meditation session in the small meadow there amongst the pine trees!
The tranquil mornings and serene evenings really put us in slow motion.
It was a great break!

Tso Moriri Lake in Ladakh.Later this year, in July-August, Ranjana and I are planning to do a long overdue road trip to Leh Ladakh. I guess the route we will take will be Delhi – Nalagarh – Manali – Keylong - Tso Moriri - Leh Ladakh (Pangong, Khardungla, Nubra) – Alchi – Kargil – Drass – Sonmarg – Srinagar – Fly back from Srinagar. Feeling ambitious, I would like to throw in rafting on the Indus, trekking in the Padum or Stok region and perhaps a couple of days of “spiritual search” in the Mahabodhi caves! We will be leading a group of like-minded travelers - all are welcome to join - dates, duration and itinerary are open to suggestions and discussion. We can also have a fixed itinerary upto Leh, after which those who want can have the flexibility of flying back Leh-Delhi instead of carrying on till Srinagar. People can also join in at Manali for the onward trip to Leh.

Last month I had promised to bring you details on the Pabbar Valley Trail; the offbeat Himachal excursion we had undertaken in October. Well, here goes… Try exploring it this summer before teeming tourists take it over in a year or two.

Always travel safely. Cheers and Peace.

Enroute Chirgaon - Chansal Ghati.Pabbar Valley Trail - Offbeat Himachal Excursion

Pabbar Valley is ahead of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh and located in the still non-touristy mountains amongst the most prosperous apple orchard belt of India, with deep forests of deodar and oak. The route for Pabbar Valley branches off the national highway NH22 (the old Hindustan-Tibet Road) from Theog, and heads towards the Pabbar Valley and beyond.
Lying in the lap of virgin nature below the breathtakingly beautiful Chanshal mountain range, the Pabbar Valley is a haven for offbeat travelers and lovers of nature and adventure. At 4220 m / 13926 feet, the Chansal Pass remains open from May to October. Known after the name of its major river Pabbar with numerous tributary streams, once rich in trout fish, it stretches from the southern boundaries of the legendary land of Kinnaur to the borders of the sacred land of Uttarakhand. The Pabbar, rising high in the snow-capped mountains and fed with glacial ice, meanders its way to join the Tons at Tiuni to ultimately feed the waters of the Yamuna.
An excursion to the Pabbar Valley can not fail to excite the offbeat traveller. A nature freak would fall in love with its deep emerald valleys, undulating hills, innumerable apple and cherry orchards, forested mountainsides, sparkling streams and rivers, quaint villages with wooden houses enhanced with pretty shale roofs, ancient temples; the Pabbar Valley which peaks at the snow clad Chansal mountain range.

We are running escorted tours to Pabbar Valley – 7 days ex-Shimla.
