Kanatal, a quaint little hamlet in Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal) state, located just 300 kilometers or 6-7 hours by road from Delhi, is perched at an altitude of over 8,500 feet. Kanatal offers a spectacular view of the snow-clad Garhwal Himalayas and lush green forests.
It is probably the closest driveable place from Delhi from where you can get such expansive views of the Himalayas.

With summer temperatures ranging from 10-25 degrees Celsius, and between minus 5 and 18 degrees in winters, the pleasant climate and lush green natural environs of Kanatal offer a welcome respite from the heat and dust of crowded cities and towns in the plains. Occupying prime location on the Chamba Mussoorie highway, the high point of the year at Kanatal occurs between December and February, when over 50 inches of powder snow carpets its areas, creating a spectacular Cottonwood Canyon and transforms the landscape into a ravishing white wonderland.

From The Terraces one can go for interesting morning walks to the adjoining villages cutting across jungle trails to reach small hilltops offering spectacular views.
Day hikes to the close-by Kodia Forest with a picnic hamper for lunch is an exciting experience.
Surkhanda Devi, on the other side, is almost a must-do. It is located 6 kms, from The Terraces, by road to Kaddukhal towards Dhanaulti / Mussorie and then a 2 km trek on foot to the little temple at a height of 9995 feet.
